On the 14th of May 2025, the CIS auditorium was transformed into a vibrant and reflective space as students and staff gathered to celebrate Vesak – an important occasion in the Sri Lankan Buddhist culture that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.
The assembly was both informative and inspiring, offering a thoughtful journey through the life of Prince Siddhartha. Students shared the story of his transformation from a royal prince to an enlightened teacher, emphasizing his compassion, wisdom, and quest for truth. The narration provided a deeper understanding of Buddhist values and the significance of Vesak to people around the world.
Adding to the serene and celebratory atmosphere were colourful lanterns that beautifully adorned the CIS auditorium. Each lantern symbolized light and hope, casting a warm glow that reflected the spiritual essence of the occasion.
The highlights of the event included a heartfelt poem recited by a year 8 student capturing the themes of inner peace, mindfulness, and the teachings of the Buddha, a graceful dance and a musical performance by a group of talented Year 10 girls.
Overall, the Vesak assembly at CIS was a meaningful celebration that combined wisdom, creativity, and cultural appreciation. It served not only as a commemoration of a sacred event but also as a reminder of the universal values of compassion, peace, and enlightenment.
In keeping with the spirit of Vesak, the courtyard outside the CIS staffroom was transformed into an explosion of colour by our talented students for the anuual Vesal lantern Competition. The four houses—Yellow, Green, Blue, and Red—showcased their artistic talents by designing stunning lantern displays that reflected the themes of Vesak, including peace, enlightenment, and compassion.
After much deliberation, Blue House was announced the winner, impressing the judges with their intricate craftsmanship and deep connection to the spirit of Vesak.
